Ties that bind
“To me, this is the epitome of good design,” says Dirt Design founder Scott Murphy, whose Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman was passed down to him from his mother, who inherited it from his grandfather, an advertising exec who originally purchased it for his Manhattan apartment. “I think design really should last generations and generations. The history – his history – is all spoken through this chair.”

Architectural
legacy
Scott’s Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman – the “start of his appreciation for great design” – takes up residence at the Boat House, an enchanting Shelter Island retreat. Originally part of the island’s working waterfront in the 1920s, the home was deeply sentimental to its first owner, Dick Driscoll, who passed it on to Scott knowing he would update its structure while preserving its soul. “It’s not just the location – it’s about the feeling people get when they’re there," Scott notes. "I look at myself as just a steward, holding down the fort."
