Designed in 1963 by Arne Jacobsen as part of his overall design for St. Catherine’s College in Oxford, the AJ Oxford Table Lamp reflects the modernist architecture of the building. The table lamps were designed as a centerpiece for long rows of oak tables in the dining hall, and are still in use today. The hat-like shade and open, curved base trace a bold line in black steel. A triple-layered handblown opal glass shade emits warm, downward light. In the variant with a top metal cap and full opal glass shade, the opal glass creates a soft halo of light around the fixture. 7’ cord. Uses an E12 LED bulb (not included). Made in Denmark.
  • Iconic design by Arne Jacobsen as part of his total design for St. Catherine’s College.
  • Hat-like shade and black steel stem, which extends into a circular base.
  • Handblown opal glass shade.
  • Reintroduced by Louis Poulsen in 2023.

Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen began training as a mason before studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he won a silver medal for a chair that was exhibited at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs. Jacobsen’s work remains appealing and fresh today, combining free-form shapes with the traditional attributes of Scandinavian design, material and structural integrity.
