The 9464 Wall Lamp (1947), designed in 1947 by Paavo Tynell, is a great example on how the Finnish designer elevated illumination into an art form. Paavo Tynell
Known as “The man who illuminated Finland,” lighting pioneer Paavo Tynell began his career when electricity was in its infancy. In 1918 he co-founded the country’s first lighting company, bringing light to Scandinavia. But it was his ability to create indirect, atmospheric light that led Tynell to collaborate with major architects – including Alvar Aalto – designing now-iconic fixtures and lamps.
