The Japan Chair (1957) marks a creative pivot in Finn Juhl's work – a turn towards spare, architectural precision shaped by his affinity for traditional Japanese design. Featuring a wooden backrest inspired by temple doors, the bearing frame and the seat and back are intentionally separated, giving each element a floating appearance. This special edition, a collaboration between Sea New York and House of Finn Juhl, adds meaningful detail through embroidered upholstery inspired by Juhl's floral watercolors. Made in Denmark.
  • An outstanding work of Danish modernism shaped by traditional Japanese design.
  • Bearing frame, seat, and back are separated for a floating appearance.
  • Upholstered in Flower Embroidery, inspired by the designer’s watercolors and woven in Denmark.
  • Japan Chair released in a collaboration between House of Finn Juhl and Sea New York.

Finn Juhl

Finn Juhl

When you look at the graceful shapes and sensual curves of Finn Juhl’s work, you may be shocked to realize that he designed these pieces 60 to 70 years ago. A pioneering force in his own country, Finn Juhl is also credited, along with fellow Danes Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Borge Mogensen and Poul Kjaerholm, with introducing Danish modern to midcentury America.
