Mantis Desk
Designed by Samuel Wilkinson for Case
While earning a degree in furniture and related product design from Ravensbourne in London, Samuel Wilkinson won several design awards, including a coveted RSA Award. After graduating in 2002, he went on to work for several years as a design consultant for leading clients such as Audi, Samsung and Virgin Airways, then opened his own design studio in 2007. He finished his largest work in 2008, co-designing l’Arbre de Flonville in Lausanne, Switzerland – a captivating, sprawling structure designed to help regenerate the surrounding Flon neighborhood. It consists of a contemporary town square with a large metal tree at its center, surrounded by steel seating fashioned to resemble tree roots. While l’Arbre is clever in its simple mimicry of organic form, Wilkinson’s Mantis Desk (2011) is no less so in its ability to satisfy different needs and spaces without being overwrought, keeping your work area tidy in the process. The solid ash top has a removable plate that allows easy access to a discreet cable management system, with a drawer mounted underneath that holds everything from a laptop to office supplies. A large flat panel doubles as a note board and privacy screen, and a double bookend keeps reading material accessible yet out of the way. Desk ships flat; simple assembly required. Made in Lithuania.
