Eero Saarinen
“The purpose of architecture is to shelter and enhance man’s life on earth and to fulfill his belief in the nobility of his existence,” said Eero Saarinen in 1959. Saarinen’s architectural legacy communicates this sentiment of giddy potential and unfettered optimism in post-war America seen in iconic projects like the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and in his sculptural furniture designed for Knoll.
More on Eero Saarinen
Icons
Eero Saarinen had a problem. The “slum of legs”
beneath tables and chairs clashed with his
pursuit of purity of form. His solution was radical
in its simplicity: Replace the many with one.
Before Saarinen was an architect, he was a
sculptor. He first studied the discipline in Paris,
and that instinct – to see objects as threedimensional forms to be felt as much as used –
shaped his approach to design.
So he set out like an artist possessed: Hundreds
of drawings gave way to quarter-scale models,
then full-scale forms he refined obsessively in
clay, shaping and reshaping until they were right.
The result: chairs and tables reduced to a single
column melting into its base, a silhouette
so fluid it reads like a drop of liquid. Decades
on, the Pedestal Table remains a monument
to Saarinen’s design conviction, its base now
offered in warm white.
