Growing up in Singapore, Gabriel Tan aspired to be a pilot. It wasn’t until his late teens, while serving in the Singaporean Navy, that he became aware of industrial design, and a floodgate opened. He soon earned a design degree from the National University of Singapore and went on to open his own studio with an international reach. But the dreams of flight persisted and eventually found their way into the Aero Collection (2017), which was inspired by early multiwing airplanes. “I worked to achieve this visual lightness and proportional harmony,” says Tan. “Like a wing, gently curved edges give the shelves a soft sculptural quality.” He also strove to provide maximum airiness between shelves to allow the storage units to almost disappear. “I hope Aero owners will get a feeling of lightness and breeziness from the collection that will enhance the spaciousness of their homes.” It’s finished in a hand-applied pigment that keeps the wood grain visible. Bottom shelves are heavily weighted for stability. Simple assembly required. Made in Malaysia.
