Kirsten Møller has fond childhood memories of summering in Aarhus, Denmark, where her grandfather, Niels Otto Møller, founded his namesake furniture factory in 1944. Though she never met him, Kirsten thinks of her grandfather daily; she’s the third generation to lead the business – and the youngest CEO to date.
A trained cabinetmaker, Niels Otto Møller handcrafted his designs over time – each took three to five years – until perfected and primed for production. He was also a manufacturing pioneer: In the 1960s, Møller’s sons Jørgen and Jens Ole joined the company. Jørgen, Kirsten’s father, expanded Møller’s legacy in the international markets, while Jens Ole helped lead the factory. Together with his sons, Møller invested in machinery that, at the time, was unheard of for furniture manufacturing.
“Niels Otto understood the potential of technology by systematizing his furniture production in a revolutionary way,” says Kirsten, “However he never intended to renounce the meticulous craftsmanship that still today takes place in the hands of those who carve, glue, assemble, smooth, and polish a Møller design.”
Experienced artisans – many who have been with the company for two to three decades – do everything in-house, from sawing raw timber to upholstering seats by hand.
“Clean, simple designs and the quality of materials and workmanship are why Nordic design is timeless,” says Jørgen. “It’s because of these materials and skills that Møller chairs are passed down from one generation to the next.”
