Details
The iconic Royal System® shelving (1948) was Danish designer Poul Cadovius’s elegant, innovative solution to heavy furniture that he felt took up too much floor space. One of the first wall-mounted storage systems, it was designed to move furniture off the floor and onto the walls, bringing in more space and light. Reintroduced in 2010, this versatile, enduring system consists of wall-mounted wooden rails, wooden shelves with slender metal brackets, and a variety of wooden cabinet styles, now including a rippled glass cabinet door option.
The storage configuration options are as pictured and include beautifully crafted wood cabinets with plain or woven-wood doors or drop-down fronts; sliding doors; or drawers, so that you can choose the option that best meets your needs. The Royal System is handsome enough to use in any room – wherever you want more storage that also allows more room for living.
You can add additional 1-Bay Extension units or Cabinets as needed. We recommend consulting with an Account Executive in our stores or via Customer Service to help choose the best configuration for you. Made in Czech Republic.

More on Poul CadoviusCare & Maintenance
Rails and drawers are made of natural solid wood, which may have a rough surface or may bend with changing humidity. All other wooden parts of the Royal System are veneered. Wood furniture should not be placed near radiators or other heat sources, which can dry out the wood and cause cracking. Do not place hot or humid objects directly on the furniture, which may stain or damage it. In general, keep wood furniture away from direct sunlight, which can darken some woods and fade others. Color changes may also occur when objects are left for extended periods in the same location on the furniture.General Information
- Never pour oil, soap or water directly onto the furniture surface. Always use a cloth dampened with the substance being applied.
- Treat all sides of the wood, and always work in the direction of the grain.
- Do not use detergents.
The Royal System in Walnut has an oiled finish that will occasionally need to be refreshed. For everyday care, use a cloth lightly moistened with clean water. Do not use detergents, which strip the oil from the surface. If the solid wooden rails are scratched, they may be sanded with very fine sandpaper (280–320 grit) and then oiled. Apply oil with a clean cloth and allow it to penetrate the surface for about 15 minutes. Wipe the furniture until the surface is clean and dry. Allow the wood to dry for 12 hours before use. Sanding and oil finishing should always be done in the direction of the wood grain.
Maintenance for Royal System in Oak
The Royal System in Oak has a soaped finish that will need to be refreshed regularly using soap flakes provided with the system. For everyday care, use a cloth lightly moistened with clean water. To resoap surfaces, it is important that the furniture be treated on all sides to avoid warping. Frequent treatment is recommended. To make a soap solution, combine about 1 cup of soap flakes with 1 quart of boiling water and mix well. Wait until the mixture cools to lukewarm. Apply solution with a cloth. Wipe off excess soap with a clean cloth and let furniture dry.
