In good shape — Designed for people who spend long hours in front of computers, the Embody Chair minimizes the negative effects of sitting by providing ergonomic support while allowing you to move. Two dozen experts in biomechanics, physical therapy and ergonomics helped guide its development. Note: This is the original Embody Chair. If you’re looking for the Herman Miller x Logitech G Embody Gaming Chair, scroll up to "you may also like."

Dynamic balance

Specifically designed for people who spend stretches of time sitting in front of a computer, the Embody Chair (2008) promotes correct posture while allowing the freedom to move. The expertise of more than 20 physicians and PhDs in the fields of biomechanics, vision, physical therapy, and ergonomics guided its development. The result is a backrest and seat that automatically conform to your body’s micro-movements, providing consistent ergonomic support in both forward and reclined positions.

Flexible support.
Embody’s Pixelated Support system distributes your weight evenly, creating a sense that you are floating. The support reduces pressure and encourages movement, both of which are key to maintaining focus and healthy circulation. Mimicking the human body, the chair’s narrow back has a central spine and flexible ribs. A Backfit adjustment controls them, allowing you to position the backrest in line with your spine’s natural curve so that you have a neutral, balanced posture. Embody’s seat features four different support layers. Together, they mold to your shape while allowing for airflow, keeping you cool and comfortable as you sit. A pneumatic seat lift and repositionable chair arms help you further tailor Embody to your specifications.

Durable and earth-friendly.
Embody is made of 42% recycled materials and is 95% recyclable at the end of its useful life. It also is PVC-free and manufactured at a 100%-green-energy facility. This is the authentic Embody Chair by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A.

Great for short and long sits.
This is it. I've had this chair for about two months and it's changed health for the better. Helps me to maintain correct posture, and provides a highly customizable setup to tailor to yourself. Highly recommend!

Good but Pricey!
Good but pricey
My husband is using it for almost one month and he has not gotten any back pain. So that is plus point. It is not as comfy as we thought it would be after paying such high price for it. My husband is still trying to figure out to sit correctly to get the best benefit out of this chair. Overall good.

Chair is pretty great, but not without issues
This chair has been extremely great are relieving my lower back pain, arm swelling, and pinching in my hamstrings. I also have an adjustable desk to further dial in my comfort while working. There, however, are things that could greatly improve how the chair feels for the user.

Before I delve into the pros and cons about the chair, here’s a little about me: I am 5’3” tall (feet to pants waist: 36”, torso length: 18.5”), and my shoulders sit about even with the top of the chair. I played sports my entire life and have developed back and knee issues as a result of the stress placed on my body. In addition to those issues, I have unknown neurological issues, including numbness, muscle tightness, and inflammation in all of my body that have recently developed.

I am currently on week three of having the chair. It has taken constant micro adjustments to find the best position for my back and seat pan, but once I found a suitable position (still slightly adjusting it) it only took about 6 days for me to feel a difference in my lower back, hamstrings, and arms. My lower back pain has mostly disappeared, there is very minimal pinching occurring on my hamstrings at the edge of the chair, and my arms are swelling much less.

Now onto the things I believe could/should be improved with the chair, especially for this price. At this price you would expect a flawless or almost flawless chair, but a few of the mechanisms on this chair could be much better in functionality:

The arms of the chairs should have a more precise position system (when moving in and out). They should be able to be locked, when placed in their desired position, so as to not be moved accidentally. The arms do tilt back with the chair, which is not too much of an issue for me because I only like to sit upright when typing but will be for those who like to lean back while using the computer. I assume this is to promote the user to sit upright. Also, the padding on the arms, although sufficient, could be a more premium material or HM should have an option for more premium materials.

Back Adjustments:
As noted above, it takes a while to adjust the back of the chair. Just take your time and adjust it slowly to see if can be adjusted to your liking, however people with taller torsos may need to call HM see if a taller version of the chair exists. While my lower back feels much better, I wish there was a to sit further upright without loosing some of the needed lumbar support, and without the top edges of the chair digging into my shoulders. I already have a right shoulder issue, and that digging pressure is very painful when trying to sit with perfect posture. Perhaps having a way to adjust the back as a whole, as it is now, and also having an inner knob adjustment for more lumber support could be implemented. This would need to be done without completely ruining the natural spine alignment provided by the chair.

Seat Pan:
The seat pan adjustment is sufficient, in nature, but there needs to be an indication (something like a positive mechanical feeling) to tell if you have raised the handles high enough to move the pan in and out. Not a deal breaker but a bit annoying sometimes.

The Sync material is a bit thick for my liking in the seat pan area, and makes my butt a bit sore sometimes. Be wise when choosing which material you want as the Rhythm or Balance materials may be a better option. This stiffness could also be due to the tight nature of the Pixelated Support.

The translucent casters work very well on hard surfaces, but could be improved for use on thicker carpets. If you have thicker carpeting, expect it to be harder to move around while sitting. However, this is far from a deal breaker unless you have a major leg or back injury.

Final Thoughts:
Although this chair has greatly helped with my lower back, legs, and arms, it leaves many things to be desired for a chair at this price tag. I have no idea wether or not I will return the chair because it has helped with many of my issues but also has caused some others to become slightly worse. Despite being beautiful and providing relief with some of the painful issues of my body, I just wish the little details would have been reviewed much more before pushing this chair to the public. It has the potential to be so much better….possibly to be the best chair on the market if some revisions are made.

Great chair, no more back pain!
I purchased two chairs. They arrived as promised and nicely packaged to protect them during shipment. No assembly was needed. The chairs themselves are very comfortable and have a lot of adjustments. My back pain from sitting so long is gone! Great chairs!

First and the last of this brand !
This is advertised as fully assembled. It is NOT! Came in 3 pieces and very hard to put it together. (I have put together very complex furniture together). The reason is that nothing is aligned, and the manual is also wrong (for example, the nail sizes are shown as "actual size", but it is not. No one does a quality check ? ). Also, the back of the chair is really ugly and shows the nails. It took them 8 weeks to deliver (via " and I was expecting a complete product that is worth $1600. Highly unsatisfied (and this is my first bad review in about 20 years, so congratulations HM!)

Good chair, bad quality control from factory.
My Embody seat makes loud popping noises when pressed down from the center, and the netting feels weaker in that area as well. You can feel the pop and pressure as you sit down.

Customer service is sending a replacement, but I have to wait another 2-3 weeks which is incredibly frustrating. Basic quality control issues like this should NOT exist on a chair that costs over $1700.

Ordered direct from HM online to specifically avoid these type of issues, thinking a brand new chair would be a safe bet. How wrong I was.

money well spent
Bought this chair for my home office to replace my "executive" style leather chair I had. Since I have been working remotely all the time and sit on the chair for 8hrs/day, the old chair hurt my back so bad. Bought this one and is worth every penny! It keeps you in perfect posture all the time and you don't get tired throughout the day.
