With his iconic seating, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. The events that made this work possible began a decade earlier at Cranbrook Academy of Art, when Bertoia met Florence Knoll (then Florence Schust). Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband, Hans Knoll. Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict agenda, and one of the results of that arrangement was the Bertoia Molded Shell Chair (1960). This piece merges the grace of his original wire-form design with a touch of color and natural flex, featuring a molded nylon seat shell mounted on a welded steel rod base. Choose a single color for uniformity, or mix and match to add accents to any room. The Bertoia Plastic Chair is Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified for its low-emitting products. Each is stamped with the KnollStudio logo. This is the authentic Bertoia Molded Shell Chair by Knoll. Made in Italy.
