Twin brothers Osvaldo and Fulgenzio Borsani founded Milan-based furniture company Tecno in 1953. Trained as an architect, Osvaldo designed many of the company’s most iconic pieces, including this sofa. The project began when a client requested one sofa from which he could enjoy two views in opposite directions. Osvaldo responded with a reversible sofa with “mobile leaves.” Ingenious in its design, the D70 Sofa with Mobile Leaves (1954) adjusts from sofa facing right to flat bed to sofa facing left simply by adjusting the two stop pins along the 18 positioning holes in the side plate. “This structure is not only beautiful for its formal harmony and static equilibrium, but extremely comfortable thanks to the adaptability of its yielding parts to the human body,” wrote Borsani in an early Tecno catalog. The D70 received the Gold Medal in the Individual Furnishings Exhibition at the 1954 Milan Triennial. Made in Italy.
