Designer Andi Kovel never says she’s a glass blower. “I never really wanted to be a glass blower. I just wanted to use it as a material…for my artwork.” Yet, along with her partner Justin Parker, Kovel is subtly reinventing the art form. The two renowned artists have created custom work for Lenny Kravitz, Donna Karan’s New York flagship shop and Ralph Lauren stores. Parker is one of the top glassblowers, or gaffers, in the country, and Kovel has taught at both NYU and Parsons, among other universities. In their Portland, Oregon, studio, they transform recycled glass and beer bottles into graceful shapes using an electric furnace that doesn’t emit carbon dioxide. The Candle Wax Vase becomes its owner’s work in progress. Finish the piece by simply burning candles, allowing the colors to drip and collect in the vase, an effect reminiscent of sand drawings. When it’s full, return it to Kovel and Parker, and they’ll send you a new one. Each is signed by the designer. Made in U.S.A.
